Key Stage 4 (Year 10-11)

At the end of Year 9, our learners choose their options for Key Stage 4. All learners study English, Maths and Biology , PSHE and Core PE then make 4 other choices from a range of subjects. Our current offer includes: History, Chemistry, Art, Computer Science, GCSE PE, Music, Drama, Animal Care, Construction, Metalwork, Catering, Mechanics and D of E or Asdan. Most learners undertake a programme of study that combines GCSEs with CTec, City and Guilds, Functional Skills and Entry Level Awards. We ensure there is a ‘hand-on’ choice in each block for those who are more suited to this style of learning.

Before the final choices are made, learners begin their transition from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4 and spend some time on the new site. During this time, learners have the opportunity to take part in taster sessions so they understand what the course involves and the commitment required. This is also an important step in meeting the new staff and understanding the expectations in these critical two years of their education. Learners are encouraged to attend as many taster sessions as they need before they make their final decision.

Once in Key Stage 4, a greater focus and emphasis falls on both academic learning and behaviour for learning. The whole team works collaboratively to ensure that ‘next steps’ are considered and that all learners have a tailored learning plan. These Individual Study Plans are put together at the beginning of Year 10 in consultation with everyone involved with the learner: the learner themselves, parents/carers, social workers, educational psychologists, career advisors, CAMHS, etc. The purpose of the Individual Study Plan is to ensure that all the important people around the learner understand their responsibilities in supporting the teaching programme the young person will receive and the examinations they will undertake at the end of Year 11.

We know that leaving a safe and supportive environment like Wilds Lodge at the end of Year 11 can be a very daunting prospect for most of our learners. The Key Stage 4 team, however, have considerable experience in making the transition to the home environment as smooth as possible. During Years 10 and 11, there are lots of career guidance opportunities available for all our learners including virtual and face-to-face talks, and our Careers Advisor works closely with the individual young person and their supporters to explore the options available to them. The Careers Advisor will arrange and assist in making visits to colleges, filling out application forms and liaising with college tutors. It is an important responsibility that this next step is carefully considered, appropriate to the learners’ needs and, ultimately, proves to be successful for their future.
